Returning Scientist, Dr. Shamay, Combats Cancer by Targeting Virally Infected Cells

January 2015

Safed, Israel -

Dr. Meir Shamay, an exciting new star in viral oncology research, is now focusing on uncovering the mechanism of cancer development caused by transmitted viruses. He is doing this state-of-the art research work at his lab at the Bar-Ilan University Medical School in Safed.

Dr. Meir ShamayAccording to Dr. Shamay, it is critical to combat cancer through viral oncology because “there is nothing more efficient at disrupting cellular pathways than viruses.” Dr. Shamay says, “Viruses provide an important window into the cellular reprogramming that can lead to cancer.”

In his Viral Oncology Lab, where he focuses on discovering novel functional interactions, he is seeking to develop drugs that will destroy virally infected cells — the cause of 15% of cancers in humans.

His lab at the Bar-Ilan Medical School has recently been generously endowed by the Elias, Genevieve, and Georgianna Atol Charitable Trust of Los Angeles. It will be named the Daniella Lee Casper Laboratory in Viral Oncology in memory of this truly inspiration young woman, a close friend of the Atols, whose extraordinary good deeds and loving-kindness will be remembered forever by all who were touched by her.

Dr. Shamay returned to Israel this past year from a prestigious position at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His research has the potential to benefit all of humanity by arresting the development of specific cancers. He is also committed to higher quality medical care throughout the Galilee, as well as training a new generation of doctors and researchers.
